My Excel spreadsheet disaster at work took 6 days to untangle

Last month I inherited a budget tracker from a coworker who left, and the formulas were referencing cells across five different sheets with no notes at all. I spent a full workweek just tracing where each number came from, and on day six I finally just rebuilt the whole thing from scratch in about four hours. The real problem was that nobody had ever documented the logic, so every new person after me would have hit the same wall. Has anyone else walked into a messy file like that, and did you fix it or start over? I am curious if rebuilding is actually the faster route most of the time.
