Shoutout to the recruiter in Austin who told me to stop giving salary numbers first
A recruiter in Austin told me over coffee about two years ago to never give the first number in a pay chat, just ask what range they have budgeted. I ignored her for a while because it felt rude, then tried it on a call for a job in Dallas and the guy came back with $12,000 more than I was going to ask for. Turns out the range was already set and I almost talked myself into the bottom of it. Now I just sit quiet and let them go first. Has anyone had this backfire on them, like a company that refuses to move without a number upfront?
Honestly the whole "who goes first" thing is kinda overblown, half the time the range is posted right there in the listing anyway. And yeah some places flat out won't move without a number, so sitting quiet just wastes everyone's time. Going first isn't the death sentence people act like it is.
