I did the opposite, I left a salary job to freelance, and let me tell you, the math only works if you're actually chasing the right clients. You probably just got a bad boss or a company that doesn't reward effort, not a bad system. Maybe the trap wasn't the job itself, it was that you picked the wrong one.
