TIL that 80% of jobs are never posted online

I was listening to a podcast about job hunting and the host said that stat. She said most roles are filled through networking or internal hiring before they even get listed. I found this on the 'Career Tools' podcast from an episode last Tuesday. It made me rethink my whole plan of just applying on job sites. Now I'm trying to reach out to more people in my field. Has anyone else shifted their focus to networking because of something like this?

Wait, that's actually terrifying if it's true. I mean, I've heard the "hidden job market" thing before, but 80% is a huge number. It makes sense though, like when my friend got hired at a marketing firm because her old boss knew someone there. The job was never posted. @mila_brown10 has a point about checking the stat, but even if it's half that, it's still a lot of jobs we're not seeing. It totally changes how you have to look for work.

Totally saw that happen at my last company too.

Okay but is that number even real? Feels like one of those scary stats people throw around to make you buy their networking course.
