Update: my "safe" side gig just imploded after 2 years

I had this freelance editing gig on the side making around $800 a month. Last Thursday the main client I worked with just up and shut down without any warning. They sent a short email saying "we're restructuring" and that was it. No severance, no nothing, and I had no backup plan. I spent the weekend scrambling to update my portfolio and send out pitches to 12 other companies. Has anyone else had a main income stream suddenly vanish like that? What did you do to bounce back fast?

Maybe the ghosting was the nicest thing they could do. Two years is a long time, and sometimes people just hit a wall where they can't keep pretending everything's fine. At least they cut it clean instead of dragging it out with a bunch of awkward conversations and half-hearted apologies.
