Walked into a networking event in Portland last Thursday, felt like a ghost for 45 minutes

I showed up to this tech mixer at a bar downtown, paid $15 for a drink ticket, and just stood there watching people form these tight little circles. Nobody looked at me, nobody said hi. I counted 3 people who walked past me like I was a plant. Finally just left after an hour and grabbed tacos alone. Has anyone else found that these things are a total waste unless you already know someone there?

I used to think networking events were fine if you just put yourself out there, but your story totally changed my mind. Standing around like a ghost for 45 minutes sounds awful, and I can't blame you for bailing. The thing is, those "tight little circles" are basically impossible to crack unless you're already buddies with someone inside them. I've had similar experiences where I'd stand near a group hoping someone would make eye contact, but nope, nothing. It's like people go to these things just to hang with the friends they already have, not to actually meet anyone new. Honestly, tacos sound like a way better use of your time anyway.

These awkward circles happen everywhere now, not just at networking events. I've noticed it at neighborhood barbecues and even a book club where people split into cliques like they were back in high school. We're all so wrapped up in our own bubbles that basic friendly gestures just don't happen anymore.

That sounds brutal, sorry you went through that.
