Warning: I spent 8 months chasing a certification I didn't even need
Back in 2021 I decided to get a project management cert because my boss hinted it would help me move up. I studied for months, paid $400 for the exam, passed it, and then nothing happened. Turns out the job I wanted actually needed a totally different cert that my company would have paid for. I wasted about 8 months of nights and weekends on something that ended up being worthless for my path. Has anyone else put time into a credential that turned out to be a dead end?
A good rule of thumb I learned the hard way is to check what the actual job posting requires before ever signing up for anything. Your boss's hinting doesn't pay the bills, the job description does.
Wait are we really calling 8 months of studying a total waste though? I mean sure it didn't get you that specific job but you still learned something from the process right?
