Had a chat with a retired framer at the lumberyard that changed my view on safety glasses

He said, 'I lost the sight in my left eye to a piece of oak 30 years ago, and it wasn't even a big job.' Now I don't even start my saw without them. Anyone else have a story that finally made a safety rule stick for you?

Okay, but "changed my view" seems a bit much. I get it for saws, but some guys act like you need safety glasses to hammer a nail. I've done tons of small stuff, like cutting a bit of trim or drilling a pilot hole, with no glasses and been fine. It feels like overkill for every single little task. The risk is probably real, but so is tripping on your own driveway.

Ever think about how many eye injuries happen on those "small" jobs? The stats are full of people who were just doing one quick thing.

Wait, you drill without glasses?
