My old boss told me to never trust a speed square for long cuts

He said they drift over 24 inches and you should always use a framing square. I argued for years until a deck job in Cincinnati where my 8 foot rafter cut was off by a full inch. Checked it with his method and the line was perfect. Now I only use the speed square for marking and short stuff. Anyone got a different trick for keeping long lines straight?

That "off by a full inch" on an 8-foot cut is such a gut punch, I've been there. Your old boss was totally right about the drift. For long lines, I'll snap a chalk line or sometimes just use a long, straight piece of scrap lumber as a guide.

Honestly a laser level is a total game changer for that, way faster than a chalk line.

My own speed square has betrayed me on more than one long cut, honestly.
