Switched to a pull saw after 15 years and I'm embarrassed how long it took
I always thought those Japanese pull saws were gimmicks. Been using western push saws since I started framing in 2009. Last month I picked up a cheap Ryoba at a garage sale for $5 just to see what the fuss was about. Cut through a 2x4 on the first stroke cleaner than I ever have with a western saw. No binding, no fighting it. Anyone else make the switch late and feel stupid about it?

Man, I was the same way. Used a Stanley push saw for like 8 years and thought pull saws were just for fine woodworking or something. Picked up a Gyokucho 265 last year on a whim. First cut through a 2x4, I actually laughed out loud. It's like the saw does the work for you. No more fighting the blade or having it bind up halfway through. Makes you wonder why we all started with the wrong tool in the first place, right?

Exactly, that first cut with a good pull saw is a REAL eye opener. Just make sure you don't try to push it like a Western saw, let the teeth do the grabbing and keep your guide hand in line with the blade.
