The $400 laser level I regret praising at that Baltimore jobsite

Last month I was framing a basement remodel in Baltimore and the GC pulled out this fancy self-leveling laser. Everyone was nodding about how it saved us 2 days on layout, and I even posted about grabbing one. But after using it side by side with my old $60 string line setup, I think we overcomplicate things. The laser kept drifting on the uneven slab, and we still had to mark every corner with a pencil and chalk. My buddy Tim laughed when I said it, but I'd rather trust a tight string and a 4 foot level any day. Has anyone else found these high dollar lasers more hassle than they're worth on rough framing?

Drifting on the uneven slab" is the exact reason I've stopped chasing fancy tools too. It's like every new gadget we buy just adds another thing to babysit, while string and a level just sit there and work.
