Warning: The way people want their trim done is totally different now

I've been doing finish carpentry for about 15 years, and the change in the last five is huge. It used to be everyone wanted big, chunky crown molding and thick baseboards, like 5 inches or more. Now, almost every client in my area asks for the clean, simple look. They want flat stock or a tiny quarter round, nothing over 3 inches tall. I think it's because of all the home renovation shows and that modern farmhouse style. I'm spending way more time on super tight miters and perfect caulk lines than on installing fancy profiles. Has anyone else had to completely change their trim game for this new style?

Hold up, that clean look is already starting to feel dated. I'm seeing a real pushback in my area against that boring flat stuff. People are asking for real character again, like picture rail and taller baseboards, but with more interesting historic profiles, not just the big 2000s style. The modern farmhouse thing is totally over, and clients want their homes to have some actual detail. This super simple trend is just a phase, and the pendulum is already swinging back.
