A customer in Boise showed me a different way to stretch carpet last week
I was doing a living room install for a retiree and he came out to watch. He told me he used to install carpet in the 80s and showed me how he does a power stretch from the center instead of the wall. Have any of you tried working from the middle out on a big room?

Working from the center out sounds like it's asking for wrinkles near the walls.

Center out can work fine if you know what you're doing, but it usually needs more passes to get the tension right near the baseboards. The old-timer probably figured out a rhythm that worked for him back then, but most guys today stick to wall starting for a reason. If you try it, just watch for ripples closer to the edges after you lock it in.

Right, because nothing says "fun afternoon" like doing extra passes just to make sure the carpet doesn't look like a rumpled blanket next to the walls.
