Got roasted by a senior installer for my seaming technique last week

Tbh I always thought I was doing fine with my seam iron but this old guy at a job in Portland watched me for 2 minutes and said my overlap was way too tight. He showed me how leaving a tiny gap actually makes the seam disappear way better. Has anyone else had to unlearn something they thought was correct?

Oh yeah I actually watched a video about this guy's process the other day. He's got this whole routine he sticks to religiously, it's not just some random thing he does.
