I finally quit glueing seams on stretch-ins after a hallway job in Toledo went bad on me
Did a stretch-in on a long hallway up in Toledo about two weeks back, three bedrooms and a run that had to be 40 feet, and I glued the seams like I always do. Next morning two of them had popped and you could see a ridge running down the middle of the hall. Turned out my seaming iron was running way cooler than it should, and I never once checked it with a thermometer because I figured I knew the thing by feel. My old boss used to preach that a hot iron and slow hand beats glue any day, and I argued with him about it for years. After that hallway I ate crow and switched to heat tape on the whole job, and it sat down flat with no lift. Pulled the iron apart after and the thermostat was shot, so I was basically guessing the whole time anyway. I still keep glue in the van but I'm not reaching for it first anymore. Anybody else been burned by a tool they trusted too long, and what did you switch over to?
