I finally took a homeowner's advice on seam placement and it saved me a callback
Got a job last month in a living room where the homeowner walked in while I was laying out the seams. She said hey, could you put that seam right under where the sofa goes instead of in the middle of the walkway. I was annoyed at first because it meant cutting a shorter piece and wasting half a roll of padding. But I did it anyway and honestly the carpet looked way cleaner with no seam visible in the high traffic spot. She even tipped me 50 bucks after I finished. Now I ask every customer where their furniture goes before I start cutting. Anyone else had a customer give advice that actually worked out better than your usual method?

Has anyone tried asking about LIGHTING patterns too? @uma_martinez mentioned flipping seams 90 degrees, which got me thinking about sun angles. I had one job where the afternoon sun hit the seam just right and made it look like a crack in the floor. Now I check which way windows face and where lamps go before I cut anything. That plus the furniture trick has cut my callbacks way down.

That homeowner tip about moving the seam under the sofa is solid. Had a guy once tell me to put the seam along the baseboard heater instead of the middle of the room and it saved me from having to re-stretch a whole section.
