Knew my seams looked off for months, couldn't figure out why
Been installing carpet for about 3 years now. Every time I finished a room the seams would be slightly visible no matter how tight I pulled. Last week an old timer watched me work for 5 minutes and asked why I wasn't trimming the backing before stretching. Turns out I was leaving the factory edge on one side every time. He showed me how to cut it back and now my seams are basically invisible. Anyone else have a basic thing click way later than it should have?

Took me a year to realize I was rushing the final stretch and not giving the carpet time to relax first.

But is the carpet really the problem here or are we just making excuses? I used to think the same thing until I just went ahead and stretched it tight right out of the box on a job and it laid perfectly flat after a week. If your carpet needs to "relax" for a year maybe you're buying the wrong kind or you're not cutting it right to begin with. I mean sure heat and humidity can mess with loops but if you stretch it too soft it'll ripple up in the corners anyway.
