Old timer told me to stop stretching against the grain and I fought him on it for 2 years

Guy named Hank who's been laying since the 70s watched me fighting a hump on a berber install in Louisville and said 'you're pulling the wrong way, kid.' Took me way too long to realize he meant running the power stretcher parallel to the backing instead of across it. Anybody else have to learn the hard way from a crusty vet?

72 and I still remember Bob the old timer in Cincinnati who showed me the same trick on a heavy commercial carpet. He just stood there smoking a cigarette while I fought that stretch for ten minutes before he finally said "you're going against the weave, son." Changed my whole approach after that day.

Funny how most things in life work better going with the grain.

Trying to sand against the grain has a certain charm though.
