Showerthought: That customer complaint about my seam placement made me totally rethink how I plan layouts

I had a job in a rental house last month and the landlord pointed out how I put a seam right where the light from a window hits the floor. I didnt think it was a big deal since it was a cheap carpet. But man once he showed me how the light made it stick out like a sore thumb I started doing all my seam placements with lighting in mind first. Anyone else get a specific piece of feedback that changed a basic step in your process?

That reminded me of a painter who told me to always match the grain direction on wood trim, which totally threw me at first.

Six months ago I would've called that overthinking... now I get it completely.

Man I had the exact same thing happen to me when I was painting my kitchen cabinets last year. A buddy who does this stuff for a living told me the same thing about grain direction and I was like come on, it's just paint right? But I tried it on a test piece and honestly the difference was night and day. When the grain goes the same way the brush strokes just disappear into the wood instead of fighting it. Now I check every single piece of trim before I start and it saves me so much sanding time later. Its one of those little tricks that makes you feel like you actually know what youre doing.
