That stair landing pattern took me 4 days and a box of wasted carpet

Picked up a job last month redoing a split level in Portland. The landing was 3 steps with a 45 degree turn and I figured the pattern match would be simple. Took me an entire Tuesday to realize the repeat on that Berber was way longer than the roll tag said. By Thursday I had cut three pieces that looked right on the floor but shifted a full inch once stretched. Finally called the mill, turns out the dye lot was off and the pattern repeat was 36 inches, not the standard 18. My trim guy kept asking if I was charging by the hour or the headache. Has anyone else dealt with a pattern repeat that was mislabeled? How do you verify before you start cutting?

Buddy had the same issue on a condo job, ended up eating the whole roll.

Saw a guy on Reddit lose half his deposit over that same mistake, @king.aaron.
