The hallway in that Oak Park rental looked new after just 3 strips
Ripped out some old loop pile on a second floor walkup last month and the subfloor was wrecked from moisture, so I threw down a vapor barrier and new pad. The before and after on that one narrow hall was night and day, has anyone else seen that much difference from just fixing the prep?

...and honestly that's the part most people skip. They see the carpet and think the fix is just swapping it out, but if your subfloor isn't sound, you're basically putting new tires on a bent rim. That vapor barrier you threw down probably did more for that hallway than the new pile ever will, cause moisture is the silent killer of any install. I've pulled up carpet that looked fine on top but the pad underneath was basically wet cardboard, and nobody had touched the prep since the 90s. Once you get the moisture locked out and the floor flat, even a mid-grade carpet feels like a million bucks. Did you notice a difference in the hallway's sound too, like it stopped echoing and feeling hollow?
