Watched a guy in Amarillo stretch carpet with his knee and felt like a moron about my power stretcher technique
I've been running a power stretcher for 12 years and always figured I had it down, but a couple weeks back I was on a 40 yard job in Amarillo with this older installer named Dale and he just shook his head watching me work. Turns out I had been positioning the tail block way too close to the wall on every single stretch, which was why I kept getting those little ripples near the baseboard that I'd blame on the pad or the tack strip. Dale showed me to back it off another 6 inches and angle the head so the pull goes more into the corner instead of straight across, and the carpet laid down flat the first time with zero kicker work after. I felt dumb because I've probably stretched a thousand rooms wrong and just covered it up with a knee kicker at the end, which is hard on the knees and never really fixes it. The tip off was honestly that my knees hurt every Friday and I thought that was just the job, but it was me fighting my own bad habit. Any of you guys ever had somebody point out something basic you'd been doing off for years? Curious if the tail block distance thing is something you all learned early or if I'm not the only one who missed it.

Ha, nope, that tail block thing sounds like total overthinking to me!
