A missed train in Boston led to a 20-year friendship

I was stuck at South Station for three hours, and a stranger shared his coffee and newspaper with me while we waited. We still meet for lunch every few months, and he helped me find my current job last year.

That's the best kind of luck, honestly.

Wait, so you call someone a friend just because you have lunch a few times a year? That's more like a friendly acquaintance... I've got people I see at the hardware store that often. Helping you find a job is nice, but it's not like he gave you a kidney or anything. Sounds like a nice guy, but "20-year friendship" is pushing it.

But that's exactly what makes it a real friendship, isn't it? Keeping up for decades, even if it's just a few lunches. It's the history and the fact he showed up when it mattered, like with the job. I get what @norab21 means about it being good luck. Some people you just pick right back up with, and that feels more solid than a lot of daily small talk.
