My neighbor's comment about his dog changed how I train mine
After watching me struggle to get my pup to sit for the fifth time at the park, the old guy with the golden retriever said 'you're giving him too many commands, he doesn't know what you want' and it hit me that I'd been confusing my dog with a dozen different words for the same action.

Wait, did you accidentally train your dog to respond to five different words all meaning the same thing? Honestly I've done that with my own pup and it was a mess. Tbh I used to tell him 'down', 'off', 'lay', and 'drop' all interchangeably and he'd just stare at me like I was speaking another language. Ngl it took me a solid month to realize he thought those were four separate tricks. Now I just stick with one word per command and it's way less confusing for both of us.

@rileyb61 hit on something big with that four word mixup. Same thing happened with my dog and 'stay' versus 'wait' - he clearly thought they meant different things based on whether I was walking away or holding a treat. Cutting down to one word per action made training go way faster for both of us.
