Ran into a stranger who fixed my busted alternator on I-94 outside Chicago for free

My car died on the shoulder near exit 27 at 11pm last Tuesday, and some dude in a pickup pulled over and helped me swap the alternator in 25 minutes. On one hand, total strangers saved me a $400 tow bill and got me home. On the other hand, if he was a scammer or worse, I could've been robbed or hurt. So do we trust the kindness of random people or is that just naive? Has anyone else had a good outcome from accepting help from a stranger on the road?

Man, I once let a guy use my phone to call his mom and he ended up grilling me steaks.

You got lucky with that one. Most of the time you let a stranger use your phone and they either run off with it or try to scam you. I let a guy use mine at a bus stop once and he spent ten minutes trying to call his dealer. Ended up costing me like four bucks in international call fees and he didn't even say thanks. Nice steaks though, must have been some gourmet phone.
