Reached 100 names on my 'met by accident' list and number 100 was a guy fixing a bike tire in Portland
I started keeping a running note on my phone about three years ago. The rule is simple, if I meet someone by pure chance and we end up talking more than five minutes, their first name goes on the list. Last Tuesday I added number 100, a guy named Devin who was patching a flat outside a coffee shop on Alberta Street in Portland. I pulled over to ask if he had a pump I could borrow, and forty minutes later we were still talking about bike touring and his plan to ride to Chile next spring. I never expected the list to get this long when I started it just to remember faces. What surprised me is that 11 of those names turned into actual friends I still hang out with. Anyone else keep a weird running tally like this, or am I the only one who does it?
Devin fixing a bike tire on Alberta Street is such a Portland way to hit 100, and 11 real friends out of that list is kind of amazing honestly. I don't keep a list but I do save little notes about random people I talk to, and reading mine back always makes me feel less alone in a big city. Your post made me want to actually start counting instead of just scribbling stuff down lol.
