That stranger at the grocery store changed how I shop for produce
Last Wednesday at the Kroger on Elm Street, I watched an older woman spend a full minute just smelling cantaloupes. I asked her what she was doing, and she explained you can tell ripeness by the scent near the stem. I used to just grab whatever looked good and got bland fruit half the time. Has anyone else learned a simple trick like this from a random person in public?

Oh man, that reminds me of something that happened to my friend Sarah at the farmer's market. She was picking out avocados and this little old man walked up and told her to flick the little nub off the top and check the color underneath. If it's green you're good, if it's brown it's too far gone. She said it changed her whole avocado game and she hasn't grabbed a bad one since. I still just squeeze them gently but I might have to try her trick.

@rowanharris - green wins, brown gets tossed.
