Traded a half-finished tile job for a welding lesson, best deal I ever made
I was replacing a shower for a retired welder named Don. Got about halfway done when my welder crapped out on a fence job at home. Mentioned it offhand. He said he'd teach me to weld if I finished his bathroom tile without charging for the extra time. Three afternoons later I can lay a decent bead. That was 6 months ago. Now I do all my own railing repairs and saved around $400 on two gate fixes alone. Anyone else traded a skill you know for one you didn't?

$400 saved on two gate fixes alone! That's wild. I can't believe how fast that adds up, especially for something most people would just pay a shop to do. Don must be a really patient teacher too - welding is one of those skills that looks easy until you're holding the torch and suddenly your bead looks like a wobbly caterpillar.

My first few beads looked like a drunk snake crawling through mud too.
