Forgot my good chisel at home, grabbed a beat-up one from the site trailer
I was trimming out a house in Portland last Tuesday and realized my favorite chisel was still on my bench at home. Had to dig through the site trailer and found a rusted Stanley that looked like someone used it to open paint cans. Took me 20 minutes to sharpen it on a diamond stone before it would even cut pine. Has anyone else had to make do with a nasty loaner tool on a deadline?

Used to think a chisel was just a chisel, and paying extra for a good one was wasted money. But after a week of fighting that rusted Stanley, having it skip and chatter through every dovetail, I had to stop and resharpen it three times a day. Finally broke down and bought a decent one from the supply house on my lunch break. That single change cut my trim time by almost half and I stopped wanting to throw my tool bag in the river. Really made me understand why the old timers get so particular about their steel.

Saw a video where a guy tested cheap vs expensive chisels and the difference was wild.
