Heard a kid at the coffee shop say "back when people actually read books" and it hit me weird

I was standing in line at this little place near my office, some teenager was on the phone complaining about a school assignment. He said something like "back when people actually read books for fun, before phones." I'm only 34, not that old, but it made me think about how I used to tear through a paperback every week in high school. Now I maybe finish 3-4 a year if I'm lucky. Most of my reading is just scrolling reddit or news headlines. Has anyone else noticed themselves reading less actual books? Not judging, just wondering if it's a me thing or a everyone thing.

Yeah "back when people actually read books" makes me feel personally attacked.

Phones didn't kill reading, they just changed what people read.
