Just found out chatter lounges were a real thing in the 1920s, not just a forum name
I was reading an old article about radio history and it mentioned 'chatter lounges' as actual rooms in hotels where people would gather to listen to the new radio sets. They were social hubs, like a proto-internet cafe. The piece said the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York had one of the biggest, fitting over 200 people. I always thought it was just a cute name for an online space. It's wild to think of a whole room dedicated to just listening and talking. Has anyone else stumbled on the real-world history behind stuff we just know as website names?

Ever notice how many old physical things get recycled as digital names?

Remember when they called it the cloud? My grandma still asks if her photos are up in the sky somewhere. We take these old physical ideas, like a cloud or a folder or a mailbox, and use them to explain things that don't really exist. It's comforting, I guess. Lets us pretend the internet is a place we already know.
