Just read that the original Chatter Lounge had a strict 'no politics' rule from day one

Found it in an old forum archive from 2004. Kind of surprising, given how every other online space back then was a total free-for-all. Does that rule still hold up in most places now?

That rule was a rare bit of foresight. Most forums back then were indeed lawless, which drove a lot of people away. The "no politics" rule is mostly gone now, traded for endless arguments. It made for a nicer place to just talk.

Yeah, it was such a smart move... I remember trying to talk about movies on another old board and every thread would just blow up into the same tired political fight. Having that one space where you knew it was just off limits made it feel like a break from the rest of the internet. Now everything is just... charged all the time, even in groups about totally harmless stuff. I miss when you could just talk about shared hobbies without it turning into a mess. That rule really did keep things civil.

It also protected the hobby itself. I saw a classic film forum get torn apart over actor's personal lives. Suddenly, nobody could discuss the actual movies without someone bringing up a modern controversy about the director. The work got lost in the noise. That rule forced us to engage with the art on its own terms, which is harder now but so much more rewarding.
