Pro tip: don't spend $150 on a fancy yoga mat like I did last spring

I bought a high end cork mat from a studio in Austin and it started peeling after three uses - has anyone else gotten burned by overpriced fitness gear or am I just unlucky?

I feel you on that peeling cork mat (seriously, for $150 you'd think it'd last through a few sun salutations at least). But here's something nobody talks about - sometimes the "overpriced" yoga gear is actually overpriced because it's trying to be eco-friendly or sustainable, and those materials just don't hold up like the cheap plastic ones. I bought a "bamboo" foam roller once that started shedding like a golden retriever, and my friend's fancy jade yoga mat got weirdly sticky in humid weather. The thing is, the cheap $20 mats from Target usually last longer because they're made of PVC which is basically indestructible but terrible for the planet. I've kinda learned that mid-range gear (like $40-$60) is the sweet spot where you get durability without paying for marketing hype or trendy materials.

Ha, @keithbutler nailed it - my "eco-friendly" mat is basically a shedding dog with sticky feet now.
