Broke my mortar and pestle grinding a single clove of garlic

Man, I was so excited to use this mortar and pestle I got at a Goodwill in Portland for like 2 bucks. It looked solid, no cracks or anything. I'm making this super cheap pasta dish with just olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes. I toss in one garlic clove, give it a little press, and the pestle just breaks in two pieces. Ceramic shards went everywhere. So now my 'fancy' garlic crushing method is dead and I'm back to using a chef's knife. The knife is fine, don't get me wrong, but it's messier and harder to get that paste. Anyone else have a 'deal' kitchen tool that totally let them down at the worst time?

Thrift store ceramic pieces are often stored in damp basements causing micro cracks.

Mortar and pestle from thrift stores can be unpredictable with how they were treated before.
