I was Skeptical of Canned Lentils Until I Actually Counted the Savings
For a year I refused to buy canned lentils because the dried ones were like 99 cents a pound. Then I actually ran the numbers last month and realized after gas, time, and the fact I always burned a batch, the canned ones at $1.29 per can actually come out cheaper for me. Dried lentils have way more servings per dollar but I waste so much less with cans. Anyone else find that convenience foods sometimes win the budget battle in practice even if they lose on paper?

Why would anyone waste time burning lentils?

Respectfully, you might be missing the point. Burning lentils is an active choice, not an accident - it's about pushing flavors beyond what normal cooking gives you. Have you ever tried charring onions or peppers to get that smoky taste? Same idea, just with lentils. Pan roasting them dry until they're blackened adds a kind of toasty, bitter depth that works great in soups or grain bowls. It's not for every recipe, but once you get it right, you'll see why some of us bother.
