Store brand beans vs name brand: is the 80 cent difference actually worth it?
I've been doing a little experiment for the past month with black beans and chickpeas. The store brand can is about 89 cents and the name brand runs 1.69 at my local Kroger. I made the same chili recipe twice, once with each, and honestly I couldn't tell a texture or flavor difference in the final dish. But when I cooked the beans plain with just salt, the name brand did hold its shape a bit better. My buddy swears the cheap ones turn to mush in his slow cooker, but I think he's overcooking them. So here's my question: are you team 'save the 80 cents' or do you think the pricier cans matter for certain recipes like salads or tacos? I'd love to hear what you all have found with your own taste tests.
