Chose the cheap brisket over the prime grade for a weekend smoke and it turned out like shoe leather
Picked the $4.99 a pound Choice packer instead of the $9.99 prime at Costco in Gary, figured I could save money and trim it right, but after 14 hours it still came out dry and tough has anyone else had better luck with the cheaper cuts or am I just bad at this?

The 14 hours might actually be part of the problem, not the solution. Choice grade brisket usually needs less time than prime since it has less fat to render, so going that long can dry it out even with good wrapping.

Broil the hell out of it with some beef broth in the pan next time... wrap it tight in foil after the first 6 hours and let it braise instead of just dry smoking. I've done that with cheaper cuts and they come out tender, still not as good as prime but way better than shoe leather.

Whoa wait, you broiled it?! Like with direct heat from the top of the oven after smoking it for that long? Man, that sounds risky, I feel like you'd just blast the outside into a hard crust before the inside even warms up. But hey, if it worked for you and saved a tough brisket, I guess I gotta respect the desperation move.
