I fell for the hype on a $400 sous vide circulator
Bought a fancy Anova Precision Oven last year hoping it would replace my combi oven at home, but after 8 months it just collects dust because it can't match the steam control of a real commercial unit. Anyone else dump cash on a gadget that sounded game changing but ended up being a waste?

The real issue with these fancy home units is they try to be everything at once and end up mediocre at each thing. A dedicated slow cooker or a basic toaster oven does its one job better and costs a fraction of the price. People forget that commercial gear works so well because it only focuses on a single function without all the extra bells and whistles. Sometimes buying a simple tool that does one thing perfectly is smarter than chasing a do it all box that compromises everywhere.

Man, I gotta disagree a bit here @grantp28. I think some of those all-in-one units actually do a solid job if you're tight on counter space or just don't want a bunch of gadgets taking over your kitchen. Yeah, they won't beat a pro-level slow cooker, but for most people they're good enough and way more convenient.

Oh, I hear you on this one. I picked up one of those all-in-one pressure cooker/slow cooker combos a few years back, and honestly it's been my go-to for weekday meals. It doesn't do any one thing perfectly, but it gets the job done without me having to dig out three different appliances from the back of a cupboard. For a family dinner or a quick batch of chili, it's more than good enough.
