Warning: my mandoline slicer almost took my finger off last Thursday

I was slicing potatoes for a 50-pound batch of gratin at the diner when the little hand guard slipped... next thing I know the blade shaved right through my thumb nail. Lucky I didn't need stitches but got a nasty bandage. Anyone else ever have a mandoline try to eat your hand?

Man, these things are basically hand grenades in a kitchen disguise. I swear my mandoline has a personal vendetta against me, especially the tip of my left index finger. I was slicing carrots for a soup and the guard slipped, felt that cold steel kiss my knuckle and yelped like a scared puppy. Now I just use the cut-proof gloves, and I still flinch every time I pick up that thing. You ever try to explain to a doctor why you have a kitchen injury that looks like a crime scene?

Hand grenade" is a bit dramatic, it's just a slicer, not a war crime.

Yeah, the "guard slipped" excuse is the kitchen equivalent of "the dog ate my homework.
