A chat with my cousin who installs solar panels totally flipped my view on home energy.

He said, 'The biggest impact isn't the panels, it's the insulation you add first.' Has anyone else had a pro point out a basic step you were overlooking?

Honestly, that feels like splitting hairs. Good insulation just seems like common sense for any house, not some special secret step. They probably make it sound bigger than it is.

Exactly, it's the simple stuff that gets you. My plumber saw my fancy low-flow showerhead and just asked when I last replaced the washer in my leaky kitchen faucet. Felt like a total facepalm moment. That tiny drip was wasting more than I saved.

Isn't it funny how we miss the obvious fix right in front of us while chasing the fancy solution? I see this everywhere, like buying expensive air purifiers but never changing the furnace filter, or getting a smart thermostat while leaving the old windows drafty. We love the big, shiny idea that feels like progress, but the boring maintenance is what really keeps things running right.
