A guy at the recycling center in Dayton said glass is basically not worth recycling anymore, is that right?
I dropped off two bins of glass at the center in Dayton last Saturday and the guy working there said most of it ends up crushed for roads because new glass is cheaper to make from sand. That surprised me since I have been rinsing jars for years thinking I was doing something good. So now I am stuck between two sides. One side says keep recycling glass because it still saves energy and the system needs volume to work at all. The other side says we should push for bottle deposits and reuse instead of single stream bins that mostly get tossed. Where do you all land on this, and has anyone here actually seen what happens to your glass after pickup?
Is it really that big of a deal though? Glass is heavy and the roads thing at least keeps it out of a landfill, so it's not like it's getting wasted for nothing. I'd rather see bottle deposits come back but I'm not gonna stress about my jars ending up as road base.
