A teacher in Bakersfield showed me her class thermometer and I can't stop thinking about it
I was at a school in Bakersfield helping with a PE unit and the teacher, Ms. Reyes, pulled out a chart her 4th graders had kept since September. They logged daily temps on the playground and found 11 days above 100 degrees by early October, way more than the same chart from 10 years ago. She said they now do recess before 9am because the blacktop gets too hot to touch by lunch. If you work with kids or coaches, are you seeing the same thing in your area?
We ran into the same thing at our elementary school in Fresno. The PE teachers started doing a quick pavement check with a laser thermometer before sending kids out, and if the blacktop was over 120 they moved everything to the grass or the shade structure. They also flipped the schedule so PE is first thing in the morning for the younger grades. A few parents donated shade sails and that made a bigger difference than we expected.
