Had to pick between a gas lawnmower and a reel one last spring
My old gas mower finally died after 8 years. I looked at a new gas one for $280 or a manual reel mower for $90. Figured I'd try the reel one since my yard is only a quarter acre. First few cuts were rough but after I got the hang of it I actually kind of like the quiet and no fumes. Anyone else switch to manual tools and stick with it?

Wait you actually look forward to mowing your lawn on a Saturday morning?

Yeah "the quiet and no fumes" part is what sold me too. I switched to a reel mower about two years ago and honestly it's been way better than I expected. My yard is small like yours, maybe a third of an acre, and after the first three or four cuts my grass started looking cleaner than it ever did with the gas one. The trick for me was sharpening the blades once a season and cutting more often so I'm not taking off too much at once. I used to dread mowing but now I actually look forward to it on a Saturday morning. The only downside is if the grass gets real wet or tall it's a pain, but for regular maintenance cuts it's perfect.
