Hit 200 days of biking to work in Columbus and I did the math on what that actually saved
I started keeping a little tally on my whiteboard back in February and last Friday I marked day 200 of biking the 4.2 miles to my office instead of driving. The number that floored me was 1,040 miles, which sounds small until I ran the gas math: at my old car's 26 mpg and roughly $3.40 a gallon here in Columbus, that's about $136 not spent at the pump. But the real kicker was the parking pass. My building charges $95 a month and I just didn't renew it in February, so that's $665 back in my pocket, way more than the gas. I know one person on a bike won't fix anything global, but I did the math on my old commute and it was close to 1,200 pounds of CO2 that never went into the air from my tailpipe alone. What actually bugs me is that our city just cut the bike lane budget while spending millions on a new garage downtown, and I honestly think small stuff like my tally is the only reason I didn't quit in week two when it rained for nine days straight. Curious if anyone else has done a real tally instead of guessing, because the money number surprised me way more than the green number did.
