My rain barrel setup failed during the storm last Thursday and I am not sure what to fix first
Last Thursday we got about 2 inches of rain in a couple hours here in Columbus and my rain barrel setup completely fell apart. The diverter on my downspout clogged up with leaves and the overflow pipe popped loose, so water poured right against the side of my house for most of the evening. I came out around 6pm to a small pond sitting next to the foundation and the barrel itself was tipped over because the base I built out of old pavers sank into the mud. I pulled it all apart and spread the water out with a rake, then just stood there soaked and annoyed. The base was my own fault, I used pavers I had sitting in the garage instead of a proper gravel pad, and I skipped cleaning the gutters in the fall like an idiot. Now I am trying to figure out if I should dig a real gravel base first or fix the leaf problem with a screen on the diverter. Has anyone here rebuilt one of these after it failed, and what did you do about the base so it does not sink again?
