My town gave me two bins and one little sticker, and I stood in the kitchen for 10 minutes
So my city rolled out the new compost program back in March, and they dropped off two bins: a big green one for yard stuff and a small kitchen pail for food scraps. The catch is the sticker. You get exactly one sticker for the pail lid, and if it peels off or gets gross, you have to drive to the utility office on Meridian Ave to get another one. I picked the pail over just dumping scraps in the green bin because the flyer said food scraps in the big bin attract raccoons. Big mistake. The pail is tiny. My coffee grounds and banana peels filled it by Wednesday, and then it sat there for four days before pickup. My kitchen smelled like a wet lawn for a whole weekend. I finally started freezing the scraps in a old yogurt tub and dumping them in the pail the night before pickup, which honestly works great now. Anyone else get stuck with a pail that's way too small for how much food they waste? What size are you all working with?
Two bins and a single sticker from the city of all things being the dealbreaker here is kind of funny to me. The sticker peels off, whatever, put a piece of tape on it or a rubber band around the lid. You already solved the real problem yourself with the yogurt tub in the freezer, which is what most people do anyway. The smell was never about the pail size, it was about scraps sitting at room temp for four days. Freeze them, dump them the night before, done. The raccoon thing is real though, so I would not bail on the pail and go back to the big bin.
