So my landlord said I couldn't put up a clothesline, so I strung a rope between two tomato cages on my balcony and it's working great.

Isn't it funny how many rules are really just about how things look? Landlords and HOAs hate clotheslines because they think it makes a place look poor or messy, even if it saves money and energy. Yeah, the "quiet workaround" thing is so real. My last apartment said no window AC units, but the central air was garbage. I just got one of those portable ones and ran the hose out the window with a piece of foam board cut to fit. Looked janky from the inside maybe, but from the street? Perfectly fine. It's all about the street view, I guess.
