Spent 6 weeks trying to get my old house's heating system efficient...

Finally figured out the duct sealing was the issue after calling three HVAC guys who all wanted to sell me a new furnace, and that $40 can of mastic fixed it in an afternoon.

Boy, isn't that always how it goes? You spend hours on the phone with "professionals" who just want to sell you a whole new system instead of the eight dollar fix. Sometimes you gotta wonder who's actually looking out for your wallet.

Oh wait, hold on. You mean a $40 can of mastic fixed it? That's crazy. I had a similar thing with my place, the duct tape was all dried out and peeling, and the HVAC guy wanted to charge me like two grand to "recommission" the system. I just bought a roll of that aluminum foil tape for eight bucks and did the whole basement in an afternoon. The difference in my heating bill was night and day, I couldn't believe it.

My basement ducts looked the same way @val949, that foil tape is seriously underrated stuff. I patched up like 15 joints with it last winter and my furnace stopped running every 20 minutes.
