That $600 heat pump water heater I installed last winter cut my electric bill by half in three months

I was skeptical because the upfront cost hurt but the first month's savings were $45 and now I'm wondering why I didn't swap out the old gas unit sooner, has anyone else seen that kind of drop or was my old water heater just that bad?

My neighbor saw his drop by about 40% after switching from electric to a heat pump model. For me, I think your old gas unit was probably just really inefficient because my savings weren't that dramatic. I paid $650 for mine and it took about 18 months to break even with the lower electric bills. The real kicker is how much less humidity I have in the basement now during summer though. So your experience lines up with what I've heard from other people in colder climates.

Isn't it funny how fixing one annoyance just uncovers a bigger one you never noticed before?

Wait, you're saying yours paid for itself in three months? Dang, my old electric one was a hog too but I still waited like a year to swap it out and I regret every month I didn't do it sooner. Funny how we'll deal with a crappy appliance for years just to avoid spending the money upfront.
