The guy at the Eugene recycling center asked me one thing and I quit buying plastic bags that day
I was dropping off a load of cardboard at the Eugene recycling center last month when an older worker pointed at my truck bed and asked if I knew where those plastic bags actually end up. I said the bin, and he laughed and said most of them get tangled in the sorting machine and shut the whole line down, sometimes for hours. I looked it up later and it turns out only about 5% of plastic bags ever get recycled, the rest sits in landfills or blows into rivers. That one minute conversation did more than any article I've read in 10 years of caring about this stuff. Now I keep 4 canvas bags in the truck and one folded in my jacket pocket. Has anyone else had a random worker change how you handle your own waste?
